Stop Snowing!

It’s pretty much snowed constantly for the past 3 days I’ve been in Cleveland. Another big storm moved in last night and we’re forecasted to receive over a 1′ of snow by Sunday morning. I managed to get out to E 72nd St. in Cleveland yesterday afternoon before this big storm came in. I’m glad I did since I easily located a Glaucous Gull and Iceland Gull within a few minutes. Unfortunately I had to shoot at a high ISO due to the fleeting afternoon sun and terrible weather conditions.

And here’s what I have to look forward to the next 5 days I’m here…. Sunday will be the only day I can actually get out and photograph. Too bad it will be overcast but it’s better than it snowing all day.

Back Home!

I am now back home from my 9-day trip to Northern Ohio. Had a great time photographing all of the migrating passerines at Magee Marsh, Crane Creek and the rest of the hot-spots along Lake Erie. I recorded a total of 25 new photo birds and much better shots of many of the birds I already had.

Now to get ready for our trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos! We leave this Friday.

Some new photos toward the end of the trip I have not posted yet:

Mentor/Painesville, Ohio

Since I’m staying in Painesville for the week, I decided to check out some nearby spots – Headlands Dunes and Mentor Marsh.

At Headlands Dunes I had mostly Ring-billed and Herring Gulls and few other common local stuff. Mentor Marsh was pretty much dead this morning. I did pick up a new photo-bird:

Crane Creek, Ohio

It’s been a heck of a weekend and I haven’t had time to post any updates until now. Due to air traffic delays into Chicago O’Hare airport, I didn’t get to my hotel near Crane Creek until 3AM EST on Friday. I woke up around 6AM (only getting about 3 hours of sleep) and headed out to Crane Creek. It was pretty stormy all day, with a couple of downpours lasting in excess of 45 minutes. I just threw a tarp over myself and my camera equipment and hoped it wouldn’t last too long!

Despite Sunday being beautiful and sunny, Saturday was MUCH more productive. But, over the course of the weekend I still got 18 new photo birds:

  • American Woodcock
  • Black-throated Green Warbler
  • Blue-headed Vireo
  • Blue-winged Warbler
  • Cape May Warbler
  • Common Grackle
  • Gray Catbird
  • Hooded Warbler
  • Least Flycatcher
  • Louisiana Waterthrush
  • Ovenbird
  • Palm Warbler
  • Prothonotary Warbler
  • Scarlet Tanager
  • Swainson’s Thrush
  • Veery
  • Wood Thrush
  • Yellow-throated Vireo

  • I’m going to be in Cleveland for the week but I hope to get some other photography in during the morning hours this week until I get back out to Crane Creek on Saturday. In the meantime, here are some of my highlight shots from the weekend:

    Prothonotary Warbler

    Hooded Warbler

    House Wren

    Louisiana Waterthrush

    Blue Gray Gnatcatcher

    Swainson's Thrush

    Veery

    Wood Thrush

    Ovenbird

    Palm Warbler

    Yellow-rumped Warbler

    Black-throated Green Warbler

    Blue-headed Vireo

    Dunlin
