Go Dodgers!

So aside from wildlife photography, I also enjoy going to and photographing Dodger games. It’s always fun trying to sneak my 100-400mm into the game. Every now and then you get a security guard that says it’s a “pro” camera and not allowed. But you just requeue and get a different guard that lets you in! This time we were sitting in the Field Box MVP section between home plate and first, just above the visitor photo pit! The game lasted until the bottom of the 13th but the Dodgers prevailed and beat the Rockies 8-7.

All pictures here.

Loons!

Loons seem to have been moving through in more consistent numbers here at Ballona Creek the past couple of weeks. Common, Red-throated and most recently photographed a Pacific Loon starting to show breeding plumage:

A Black Oystercatcher kept playing peek-a-boo with me as I was photographing the Pacific Loon:

And the Caspian Terns were still chasing each other around as usual!

Lenovo X300, Canon 10-22mm, Tamrac Adventure9

In preparation for our upcoming trip to the Galapagos I ordered a few new toys: Lenovo X300 Laptop, Canon 10-22mm Lens and the Tamrac Adventure 9 Backpack.

The all new Lenovo X300 is the rival to the new Macbook Air. I opted for the Lenovo vs. the Air since all the Adobe software I own runs on Windows. There are also 3 USB ports compared to the single port on the Air. Fully loaded the Lenovo was a better deal as well for a few hundred bucks less. I ordered with 3GB RAM and the 64GB solid-state hard drive. It comes in at 0.73″ thick and only 2.9lbs.

Also picked up the Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens for panoramic shots. With the 1.6x digital crop factor on the 30D/40D bodies the effective focal length is 16mm-35mm. It was either that or drop a few thousand on a full-frame 5D or 1DsMkIII!

The backpack provides ample room for extra lenses, bodies, laptop, bottles of water and other necessities while hiking in the Galapagos.

Ballona Creek

I headed out to Ballona this afternoon to see what spring migration has brought to the beach. Nothing new but the Terns were out and about dancing and trying to steal each other’s food.

Sanderling’s were in quite large numbers as they’re working their way north toward Alaska and they are starting to show a lot more of their breeding plumage now.

‘Possum

We were greeted by a pretty friendly Opossum on Sunday evening. I saw our cat running from window to window like a lunatic so I peeked outside and saw the ‘Possum sneaking along our lawn. I grabbed my camera and snapped a couple photos:

Here he is smiling for the camera:
