This morning there was an adult Common Loon in close to full breeding plumage in SB harbor marina where the rock jetty angles off of the breakwater. Mark Bright Santa Barbara |
Yesterday, while looking for bugs and flowers, I had a somewhat unexpected WHITE-TAILED KITE along Refugio Rd on the north side of the Santa Ynez Mountains*. Otherwise I only noticed the usual breeders. Wim *: Somewhatconfusingly this is called "South Refugio Rd", as it is to thesouth of the Santa Ynez River. -- Wim van Dam (Solvang, CA) SBCO #398: Plumbeous Vireo |

During fieldwork this afternoon along Baron Ranch Trail I had a silent adult male Tennessee warbler just over 1 mile from the trailhead in willow along the stream. Work here was concentrated in a small area so most of the mile up was not birded. No other migrants just many of the expected summer visitors and resident birds nest building and making food deliveries. Eric Culbertson Carpinteria |

I headed up to Kinevan this morning hoping it would be above the marine layer, but it was right in the ceiling. Therefore most birding was by ear. Best find was a singing Cassin's Vireo on the north-facing slope. At first it was pretty high up but on my return walk, it had moved down closer to the road, but still I couldn't get a visual. This was the area between and above road markers 11 and 12. Other birds heard included at least 5 Warbling Vireos, 4 Yellow Warblers, STeller's Jays in 2 locations, and a nice assortment of Woodpeckers (Acorn, Nuttall's and Hairy). In mid afternoon, I made a short stop at the Goleta slough checking out areas K&L. No Yellow-headed Blackbirds, but in Area L (as viewed through the fence along the road that runs past Goleta West Sanitary District), I picked up a nice WHITE-FACED IBIS foraging with Black-necked Stilts. Also present were 2 Dowitchers (NOT in alternate plumage), and a Greater Yellowlegs. Overhead swallows included Barn, Rough-winged, and Cliff. Florence Sanchez |
All, I hiked up to Cachuma Mountain today. Highlights were a seen Mountain Quail and a Black-chinned Sparrow. Lots of Lazuli Buntings along the trail. -- Nick Lethaby Goleta, CA nlethaby@... Mobile: 805 284 6200 -- Nick Lethaby Goleta, CA |
I would add that it might be possible to read Lehman's account as saying flocks like the ones being reported are unusual at this season. And I"m glad people are making reports like this, if they think they could be of interest. It's better to get info out there rather than hold onto it when it could be important. But, I will point out that, while he does cite some occurrences individually, the ones Paul cites are extreme totals for the dates he gives: 400 in Goleta 16 May 2007 209 at Barka Slough 17 May 2015 33 on UCSB campus 1 June 2002 31 in Buellton through 1 June 2012 Maybe only one of the reports of my own that I referred to in my previous post fits this category. My feeling is that good numbers of waxwings lingering until at least mid-May is not an uncommon occurrence. Just taking a quick look at my own eBird data, I have had numbers like those being reported this year, just about every year since I became a consistent eBird contributor, which goes back to 2011. I'm sure if others look at their own data, they'll find something similar. Dave Compton Santa Barbara toggle quoted message Show quoted text |
Hi All. I saw at least 10 Waxwings at MacKenzie Park yesterday. Wasn't there to go birding, but noticed them. I did not realize this was late for them until I read this email thread. Thanks, Jason toggle quoted message Show quoted text |
To add to Andy and Florence's reports about waxwings, I've been seeing very large numbers on campus lately. I'd seen them in regular small groups (say, 6 to 30) through most of the winter, but starting on Apr. 29 I've been repeatedly seeing very large groups in the fig trees around Ellison Hall (where I work). Several times I've estimated ~200 birds, most recently yesterday. I just went on a very short walk and this time I saw ~60, but there are a lot of other figs I didn't visit! I don't recall seeing numbers this large on campus in previous springs, but I might be forgetting. -Conor toggle quoted message Show quoted text |
I headed up there this morning to complete a two-part survey I try to do each year. This time the plan was to hike from the end of the paved road to Broadcast peak and back, with side trips up both Santa Ynez and Broadcast Peak roads. As it turned out, I did not go farther than Santa Ynez peak. It was very warm up there even at 8:30 and I discovered my second water battle hadn't made it into my pack, so I opted for prudence and safety. It wasn't very birdy, but I had 3 male Lazuli Buntings at various places, and I heard a singing Black-chinned Sparrow from down below the road about a half-mile before the pavement ended. Flowers that I missed last time (like pitcher sage) are now blooming and some of the patches of Golden Yarrow along the roadcuts were breath-taking. Yuccas are also starting to bloom along the road. Big surprise was the number of Fairy Lanterns (Calochortus albus) I saw at many places all along the road, even in full sun. There also were a few beautiful Larkspur plants near the back entrance of Rancho La Sherpa. They are working Refugio Road at the really bad spot above the first switchbacks. I had no problem going up and had absolutely no traffic on upper Refugio and West Camino Cielo Roads. However, coming down I ran into lane closure where they were working, which I did expect, but I didn't expect that lane closures would average an hour! So I sat in a very dull spot under the foggy ceiling for almost that length of time before I could continue down, following one of the worker's flatbed trucks. We ran into more delays as heavy equipment was coming up and vehicles had to jockey for position on the narrow portions of the road. For the next couple of weeks, I'd suggest avoiding this area. Addendum to my report from Refugio Road/Quiota Creek: I forgot to mention I heard a Cassin's Vireo song there yesterday. I could not get a visual on the bird. And in regard to a post about Cedar Waxwings: I had a flock of about 30 on my first visit to Baron Ranch on May 9, and about a dozen Waxwings at both Barka Slough and the Santa Ynez River earlier this week.
