  5. Carp birding and Carp Creek LINK
    DATE: Feb 19, 2023 @ 1:19pm, 2 year(s) ago
    Hi folks,
I birded around Carpinteria today and didn't see much of interest at the Kim's Market pond, Santa Monica Creek, or Carp Salt Marsh Nature Park. The tide was pretty high at the latter, and there were reasonably good numbers of wigeon, Green-winged Teal, and Gadwalls. An adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was along the Franklin Creek Channel, south of the foot bridge. Seems like numbers are low in Carpinteria this winter, based on eBird reports.
My final stop was at Carp Creek, where I was pretty shocked at the storm damage. All of the willows on the west side of the creek below 6th St are gone, and the bank has been shored up with boulder revetment from 6th down to the sewage plant. The whole area on the west side is fenced off, blocking access going downstream. Just upstream of 6th, it's theeast bank that's been more heavily damaged. The trees that support the monarch roost in this area, or at least some of them, have been badly undercut from bank erosion. There's more bank erosion near the 8th St bridge, such as just south of the bridge on the east side of the creek. There's no vegetation anywhere in the creek bottom, of course, as this is a pretty normal occurrence after heavy winter rains. But the riparian habitat has taken a big hit throughout this section of creek, and I'm sure the same is true elsewhere.
So, birders going here should be aware that there may be access limits and that we have lost some habitat due to the storms.

It also flew into the short willows on the same side where I was standing. At one point the bird flew toward me and was on the ground nearly at my feet (3 - 4 ft. away). It would disappear for a time, then return to the same area. I watched it 5 or six times in about one hour. Photographed"

  9. Gaviota, Refugio, El Capitan Birds Oct 3 LINK
    DATE: Oct 3, 2022 @ 4:54pm, 2 year(s) ago
At Gaviota SP this morning I found Peter's CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and TROPICAL KINGBIRD. Both likely continuing birds at this location. Nothing special at Refugio but it wasn't for lack of trying. I was unable to find the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron there but it has been more than a week since it was last reported. Several typical western migrants around the creek. At El Capitan I located a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER in the oaks along the entrance road near the (dry) creek.

  11. Gaviota and Refugio State Parks - Tropical Kingbirds Gaviota LINK
    DATE: Sep 15, 2022 @ 2:29pm, 2 year(s) ago
I birded Gaviota and for a short time Refugio this morning. Gaviota had at least 2 Tropical Kingbirds. There may have been a third when one of the two I I'd flew off and was followed by a third bird of similar size and shape but lighting prevented adequate looks. Two Northern Pintail, a Wandering Tattler and Canyon Wren were other nice finds. Refugio had a continuing Yellow-crowned Night-Heron and a few Wilson's and Yellow Warblers in the Eucs along the overflow parking road.

  13. Gaviota and Refugio State Beaches - Few migrants, continuing Yellow-crowned Night-heron LINK
    DATE: Aug 29, 2022 @ 10:51am, 2 year(s) ago
I looped around Gaviota campground and walked lower section of creek at Refugio and then up to second creek crossing up Refugio Rd. Very little sign of migration. Gaviota had a Western Kingbird and Wilson's Snipe. At Refugio the Yellow-crowned Night-heron continues in lower creek section. I had a Wilson's and Orange-crowned Warbler up at the second creek crossing.

  15. Refugio State Beach - Yellow-crowned Night-Heron LINK
    DATE: Aug 23, 2022 @ 2:30pm, 2 year(s) ago
A quick stop at Refugio State Beach yielded a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron in the lower creek section. Nice side by side look with a juvenile Black-crowned. Not much evidence of land bird migration. Earlier a quick stop at Bella Vista Open Space got me no more than a couple of Orange-crowned Warblers.

Much smaller than nearby Greater Yellowlegs, but larger than any peep. Some pale was evident on mandible when the light hit the bill. My assessment as an adult was partly based on views of the same bird a week ago, but also on the appearance of the breast area during this viewing. Because of the apparent small size, I assume this is a female."
