  3. Santa Barbara Birding, Jan 26 LINK
    DATE: Jan 26, 2023 @ 2:35pm, 1 year(s) ago
This morning I checked on a few places to see if I could pick up some of our winter visitors before they depart. I did not turn up a Lucy's Warbler in the tipu trees in the Cacique Street post office parking lots. I had better luck at the Bird Refuge, where I had good views of the Tropical Kingbird that has been there since fall. I first saw it in a bare sycamore tree along the path between platforms 1 and 2; then it flew to the top of the Cypress tree near platform 1.
I checked on the Winter Wren on Arroyo Burro Creek and for the second time since Hugh Ranson's report, I did not find it. I note that Dave Compton also did not get it when he looked recently. We hope that it is still around but future reports (including nil reports) would be helpful.
I briefly checked the nice assortment of ducks at Laguna Blanca but did not turn up anything remarkable. The hybrid Sapsucker continues on San Roque Creek, but it took a long time to put in an appearance this morning.

    - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S124900899
    - Comments: "Approximately here: 34.632216, -120.001414. Spizella perched on a small bare tree along the roadside, near the end of Alisos Rd. Small clear-breasted sparrow associating with a large flock of Lark and White-crowned sparrows. We briefly saw the bird through a spotting scope before it flew down and we lost it in the farm field. Warm, buff-colored upper breast, white lower breast and belly, no central spot. Contrasting gray nape and back of the head, narrow white central crown stripe. Fairly strong malar stripes. We ruled out Brewer's due to more richly colored warm buff tones overall. A warm-toned Chipping could be a candidate but our general impression was that it was not like the Chipping Sparrows we have seen before, and we immediately thought of Clay-colored with its extensive gray nape. We did not really see the back of the bird at all."

    Red-naped x Red-breasted Sapsucker (hybrid) (Sphyrapicus nuchalis x ruber) (1) CONFIRMED
    - Reported Nov 05, 2022 08:56 by Jamie Chavez
    - Waller Park, Santa Barbara, California
    - Map: http://maps.google.com/ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.9029675 ,-120.4392958&ll=34.9029675,-120.4392958
    - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S121901602
    - Media: 3 Photos
    - Comments: "Observed this obvious hybrid sapsucker deep within a deciduous tree. It shows Red-naped Sapsucker facial pattern and a red throat but it had extensive red color bleeding down onto the breast where the black breast band would be on a pure Red-naped. It also had a larger area of red on top of the head and down to the nape. This hybrid combination is my best guess."

  11. Botanic Garden and Mission Canyon Road, Aug. 10 LINK
    DATE: Aug 10, 2022 @ 2:38pm, 2 year(s) ago
I walked from Rocky Nook Park to the Botanic Garden and back this morning. While birding activity wasn't high, I had singing Orange-crowned and Yellow Warblers in Rocky Nook and singing OC Warblers all along Mission Canyon Road.
The same was true at the Botanic Garden. A Garden staff member who is a birder told me that the juvenile OCs had been singing up a storm, and that certainly was the case when I got there. I had 2 Yellow Warblers near the Campbell bridge (adult female and a young bird, probably from this year's nesting), and a Wilson's Warbler on the Pritchett Trail. There was no sign of a Lucy's Warbler at the location indicated in the eBird report from Aug. 8, but again, similar-sounding Orange-crowned were active and singing in the vicinity.
Though the creek is very dry, I think the Garden itself will be worth checking as we transition into fall migration. A lot of the Catalina Cherry bushes are in full fruit and I noted that the Summer Holly shrubs on the east side of the Meadow are loaded with ripe red berries. Both of these are attractive to birds. I didn't notice grapes yet--they ripen later but again are popular with lots of species.

All other aspects of this bird suggest this is a full Yellow-shafted Flicker: gray crown, brown face, black mustache, and red nape. I call it a hybrid only because I did not get a complete look at the underwings and undertail and because the default assumption is that most birds reaching the county are hybrids.
On 31 Jan 2022, it was seen again. This bird showed a yellow undertail and the other marks seen on 22 Jan (see https://ebird.org/checklist/S101244103 ). So I abandon the hybrid determination and I'd call this a YsFl. Photos on 31 Jan did not turn out."

It visited several trees all along an almost a direct line between the erstwhile salmon colored house location to the new horse trail sign location. It really pays off to listen for the chwee call it makes every few minutes as it flies. It's soft and sounds a bit similar to a common louder OATI call so be sure to refresh your memory on the PARE sound beforehand."

  25. Lucy's Warbler and Yellow Warbler on Padaro Lane LINK
    DATE: Jan 25, 2022 @ 10:04pm, 2 year(s) ago
    Hi there!

The Lucy's Warbler and Yellow Warbler were still hanging out on Padaro Lane in Carpinteria as of mid-morning today, Tuesday. We followed Eric's great tips and started at the willows towards the end of Santa Claus Lane and found the Yellow Warbler in a front yard close to the eastern start of Padaro Lane. The Lucy's was a tad farther west than most birders have reported it, in the willows lining the highway across from 3505 Padaro Lane. It also spent some time in those tall eucalyptus trees adjacent to the willows. The eucalyptus were very birdy but not that easy to bird! One of the two Black-throated Gray Warblers was also spotted there.

    - Comments: "There's a twosome of a Greater Scaup in female type plumage that is paired with a male Lesser Scaup. The female's rounded brown head with the eye closer to the top of the head than the Lesser Scaup's is a good indication of Greater. Lesser Scaup show peaked purple head. Look at the large bill that the female type has, plus the sizeable nail that hangs off the front of it. I think this is a Greater Scaup."

Like all mergansers, it had the scissor-like indentations along the length of the pointed bill. Excellent viewing."

    - Comments: "Continuing rarity found by Eric C. on Jan 10. Seen across from 3505 Padaro Ln in the yellow flowering willows along the highway at N 3424'48.8268" W 11933'25.4772" from around 10 - 10:30am. This is a bit farther west than most birders have reported it. The bird did spend some time in the tall eucalyptus trees adjacent but was much easier to see when it came back to the smaller, thinner willows. A short-tailed warbler with pale gray upperparts, no wingbars, pale eyering and whitish undersides. We didn't get to see the salmon-colored rump but it seems to be visible in a few of the pics."

  29. Re: Tecolotito Creek Park eBird hotspot LINK
    DATE: Jan 24, 2022 @ 10:41am, 2 year(s) ago
    Thanks, Wim and Dave.
The little park certainly has potential to turn up some more birds, and if you bird just this area, the new hotspot is obviously the way to go. But I hope people won't take theoccurrence of a single rarity here, and the availability of the new hotspot,as a reason notto bird elsewhere along the creek. Here's a sampling of what's been found here along the creek between Hollister and the railroad tracks over the past 25 years or so:
Scarlet Tanager Black throated Green Warbler (same day as the tanager) Kentucky Warbler Philadelphia Vireo Zone-tailed Hawk (the famous wintering one) Painted Bunting Lucy's Warbler Tennessee Warbler Swamp Sparrow Chestnut-sided Warbler (one of just a couple that have wintered) Northern Parula (wintering) Black-and-White Warbler (present for three or four straight winters)
Many of these were in the business park on the other side of Los Carneros, where there are a couple of tipu trees and some ironbark (pink blooming) eucalyptus on the west side. But some were between Los Carneros and the railroad tracks. Also, the trees in the business park on the other side of the creek from the new housing development have grown up nicely and usually have a fair number of birds. So, there's a lot of birding to be done in this area. Although it's been out of vogue as a birding spot for the past few years, it's had some great moments. I cut my teeth as a birder here in the mid-90s, when I worked in the business park where the City of Goleta is now located, and got some early life birds like Northern Waterthrush and MacGillivray's Warbler on my breaks. It's changed a lot since then, with the open field on the east side being replaced by the houses, but it's still worth awalk along either side of the creek, either side of Los Carneros.
