    American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) (1)
    - Reported May 17, 2023 13:21 by John Callender
    - Santa Cruz Island--Scorpion Campgrounds to Scorpion Anchorage (no seawatch), Santa Barbara, California
    - Map: http://maps.google.com/ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.0485102 ,-119.558174&ll=34.0485102,-119.558174
    - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S138189068
    - Media: 3 Photos
    - Comments: "It was in the lower campground, and was not associating with the Common Ravens in the area. It seemed more compact and smaller overall than the ravens I'd been seeing, and I thought it was probably the same American Crow seen and photographed back on March 4 (see https://ebird.org/checklist/S130316163 ). But in comparing this bird with the photos of that one, it seems to be noticeably heavier-billed, especially in the first photo where the bird is in profile. After consulting with more experienced birders I'm comfortable reporting it as American Crow. One of my correspondents thinks there have been two crows reported from here, so maybe this is one of the two, and is heavier-billed than the one photographed on March 4. I did not hear this bird vocalize."

Yesterday a friend and I hiked the Montaon Ridge Loop Trail out of Scorpion Ranch. It's beautiful out there right now, and I'd highly recommend a visit. There were several Island Scrub-Jays in the campgrounds, and I was pleased to see many more along the hike--they are doing well. The American Crow continues around the ranch house. Other birds seen included Hooded Oriole, 2 Bald Eagles (2nd year and adult), 2 Loggerhead Shrikes, and Sharp-shinned Hawk (adult).

The chilly waters of the channel were very quiet apart from 3 Common Murres.
