Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus) (1) CONFIRMED
    - Reported May 14, 2023 08:49 by David Compton
    - Cielo Vista trail, Santa Barbara, California
    - Map: http://maps.google.com/ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.513611 ,-119.799086&ll=34.513611,-119.799086
    - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S137696621
    - Comments: "Adult dark morph flying through the pass, moving northward from Painted Cave. Dark, compact buteo with visible dark border to wing (Dark primary and secondary tips), dark and white barred tail, with particularly prominent white bar across center or just toward tip. The body appeared dark below, but I could not see the underwing. Clearly smaller than Red-tailed or Swainsons and obviously more compact than the latter. Flew in typical buteo style, wings fairly flat when soaring, and slower wing beat when in direct flight compared to Coopers Hawk. Bird was in silhouette when soaring and showed only dorsal side as it flew past and disappeared behind ridge."

  3. Broad-winged Hawk, E. Camino Cielo LINK
    DATE: May 14, 2023 @ 10:59am, 12 month(s) ago
This morning, I saw an adult dark morph Broad-winged Hawk soar above Painted Cave and then fly north over E. Camino Cielo and the Cielo Vista Trail, near the intersection of Painted Cave and Camino Cielo. This area and much of the Santa Ynez Ridge top were above the clouds this morning. Next best bird in the area was a very dull gray Cassins Vireo that stopped and sang near the trail head, then continued north. It was almost 9am by the time I got to this area, so its hard to know if many migrants were passing through. The only other obvious ones were a singing Wilsons Warbler and a singing Warbling Vireo.

    DATE: Oct 28, 2022 @ 3:38pm, 2 year(s) ago
This Friday afternoon I checked out some standardSanta Ynez Valley spots for winter arrivals. At Armour Ranch Road near the@246 roundabout was a GOLDEN EAGLE and a flock of 70+ AMERICAN PIPIT. Driving alongHappy Canyon Road I had a fly-over PEREGRINE FALCON. At Happy Canyon Road x Alisos Road I found a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. I did not see any Horned Larks and only a few WESTERN BLUEBIRDS.

  9. reorganization of Santa Cruz Island Scorpion eBird Hotspots LINK
    DATE: Oct 28, 2022 @ 12:28pm, 2 year(s) ago
    For the eBirds among us:
There has been a discussion this fall about the Santa Cruz Island (SCI) eBird H otspots of Scorpion Harbor , Scorpion Campground , and Scorpion Canyon . The main problem being that most eBirders start their checklist in the harbor and keep on using the same hotspot as they walk to the campgrounds. To resolve this problem the Scorpion Harbor and Scorpion Campground hotspots have been merged into one:
Santa Cruz Island--Scorpion Campgrounds to Scorpion Anchorage (no seawatch)
https://ebird.org/hotspot/L2442150 The Scorpion Canyon hotspot has been moved more to the west and is now named Santa Cruz Island--Upper Scorpion Canyon
    https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1772034
To capture checklists with seabirds-only from the harbor the following new hotspot has also been created: Santa Cruz Island--Scorpion Anchorage (seawatch only)
https://ebird.org/hotspot/L21361493 I realize that not everybody is going to be happy with this merger as we now have records of seabirds that are positioned inland, but I feel that the overall quality of the new (no seawatch) hotspot is better than the quality of the old hotspots. Here are some things that people can do smoothen this change: If you have previous SCI-Scorpion harbor checklists that qualify as "seawatch only", then change the location of those checklists to the new "seawatch only" hotspot. If you have previous SCI-Scorpion Canyon checklists that were reallyon the campgrounds, then change the location of those checklists to the new "Scorpion Campgrounds to Scorpion Anchorage" hotspot.
If you don't like the name of a hotspot, change that name for your personal use. If you don't like the definition of a hotspot, new or old, use your personal locations instead. Thanks

  11. Your trip to Santa Cruz Island LINK
    DATE: Oct 11, 2022 @ 1:12pm, 2 year(s) ago
    Dear all,
This Monday, LA birder Marky Mutchler had a pretty awesome day at Santa Cruz Island. With her permission, I'm forwarding here her trip report.
    Enjoy. Wim
    ---------- Forwarded message ---------

Yesterday, October 10th, I boarded the 9:00 Island Packers boat heading towards Scorpion Harbor. Almost all of Ventura county was rather dead, with small shearwater numbers and low diversity. Upon entering Santa Barbara county, we encountered a large pod of Common Dolphins and several Humpback Whales, of which a Brown Booby was foraging near ( 34.110533, -119.455541). After circling the whales, we headed back on route to Scorpion, where a large raft of shearwaters, gulls, and a couple of pelicans were loafing. I noticed a Red-footed Booby sitting on the water, quickly flushing as the boat neared. I am less sure of the coordinates, however, it was likely near 34.054013, -119.535809 . Once on the island, the first bird I noted was actually a Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Quickly after spotting the Grosbeak, a continuing American Redstart made an appearance in the fig trees next to the private residence. With cloudy and cool conditions, it seemed the birds were in a frenzy. A Tropical Kingbird shot by, and the number of warblers and vireos was quite astonishing. Turning towards the first campground I came across two Tennessee Warblers, however not much else was kicking around. Between thefirst and the second campgrounds, however, seemed to be the center of activity ( 34.047910, -119.565681) . This is also when I ran into and joined Spencer Seale, Peter Gaede, and Hugh Ranson. The second campground area was hosting 2 Clay-colored Sparrows, but not much else. Returning to the center of activity, a Hooded Oriole, Western Wood-Pewee, 22 flyover Greater White-fronted Geese, and 4 more Tennessee Warblers were found. Spencer et al. also had a Northern Parula and Virginia's Warbler in this section, but I was not as fortunate. Eventually, a Blackburnian Warbler also popped up in this section and made for an incredible day. Returning back to the harbor to catch the 4 pm boat, I also had an American Pipit fly over, which, after reviewing photos, looks like a good candidate for a "Japonicus" Pipit. Otherwise, the birds from the morning were still hanging around the private residence with little change. The boat ride back to Ventura featured usual shearwaters, a Sabine's Gull, a couple of Black Storm-petrels, and a few murrelets - but no boobies. All-in-all, it was a fantastic experience and this LA birder couldn't be happier!
    Best, Marky

  15. North County Big Day LINK
    DATE: Oct 9, 2022 @ 8:19am, 2 year(s) ago
    All:
I kind of did a Big Day yesterday. I started inland to try and escape the early dense fog in the Santa Maria Valley. At the Santa Maria Mesa Road Ponds and found 4 Blue Winged Teal and 8 Cinnamon Teal. I then moved to the Sisquoc Bridge. Not much happening there except a couple of somewhat late Barn Swallows. From there I went to Rancho Sisquoc. My best bird of the day was a Broad-winged Hawk at rest in the Eucalyptus trees along the 2-mile road into Rancho Sisquoc. Unfortunately, I misidentified it. I've never seen one perched like that before. Anyway, thanks to John Callender for catching my mistake.
From there I birded north Long Canyon Road. Here I found several Yellow Billed Magpies and two Greater Road Runners. Sometimes I'll go a year and never stumble on even one.
On the way to the Los Alamos Water Treatment Plant, I found a Golden Eagle soaring above Palmer Road just south of Sisquoc.
Birding at the Los Alamos Water Treatment plant was slow. The settling ponds are dry. I did find at least 3 Cassin's Kingbirds harassing each other in the Eucalyptus trees east of the plant.
I finished at my property in Orcutt where I added the very reliable Scaly Breasted Munia, Chestnut Backed Chickadee and Great Horned Owls.

    - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S120192913
    - Comments: "Three birds observed in flight immediately west of the Jalama Ranch barn. Two were flycatching above live oaks in the area and headed west toward the coast, while a third flew south over the canyon (Jalama Road and creek) toward trees in the distance. Identified by their glossy, all blackish plumage (unable to see underparts). They flew with direct, crow-like flight, but were smaller than crows in body size and shape, and with the ability to chase flying insect prey. They appeared to be after bees."

    - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S120283754
    - Comments: "Most around Black Brush gate and oak woodland to north about 0.5 km. (roughly the same area where Jamie Chaves saw them last year). Some further south, the last just south of the Jalama Ranch main house.
First saw a group aerial foraging above oaks, at least 8 simultaneously, plus many in trees. Then moved S to Black Brush gate: there at least 10 air-born plus others in trees These two spots are close, so it is hard to tell exactly the number, but there were a LOT of birds, plus a few scattered further south. (this group was seen 20 minutes and 2 straight miles away from the first group seen on North slope (10 mile marker). I'm pretty sure it is a different group. All very active, hard to get photos. It is worth noting that on the way back out I only saw 2. in total."

    - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S120247739
    - Comments: "Seen well, no photos. At about 10:15, an all-dark woodpecker flew into the exotic tree at the corner of the entrance driveway here: 34.430040, -119.889058. I was viewing from about 150' up the driveway. At first glance through binoculars, I thought of a sapsucker, because of a bright white slash down the side of the bird. But it presented a completely black back, and then turned around and I saw its white face and head, with a red hind-crown. It perched for a minute on a snag of the small tree (the same tree favored by many Western Tanagers this time of year). Two other birders were able to get a brief look before it flew to the southeast toward a large eucalyptus on the opposite side of the driveway, where we lost it. Several birders arrived to look for it without success. Eventually I walked to the far east end of the tech park, where there are several conifers bordering an apartment complex. After a few minutes of scanning there, I heard its distinctive double call notes and a rattle similar to Hairy Woodpecker. I followed some gentle tapping sounds, and found the bird on the main trunk of a pine tree, where it called a couple more times. The bird was eventually re-found by others, and it flew out of the area to the north across the freeway."

Did a small loop around the east end of NCOS to see if it would pop back up, and sure enough I saw it again just east of the bridge (34.4207228, -119.8728260), but it flushed quickly again. This time it went up into the eucs across the path and I was able to get some photos of it.

This afternoon I checked out the subject location to see what has arrived there by now. Best birds were a FERRUGINOUSHAWK and an adult BALDEAGLE. Other sightings of note were 2 AMERICAN KESTREL, a possible Prairie Falcon and another possible Ferruginous Hawk. SAVANNAH SPARROW numbers were low. No Lewis's Woodpecker, Bluebirds or Horned Larks (yet).

  21. 156 Lewis's Woodpeckers! LINK
    DATE: Oct 7, 2022 @ 3:57pm, 2 year(s) ago
I started the morning at La Mesa Park, which still has lots of western migrants in the lerpyeucs, including at least 4 Black-throated Gray Warblers and 2 Warbling Vireos.
I then picked up Mark Bright and we headed up to Romero Canyon. A couple of days ago we birded from Bella Vista, but today we decided to hike up to the Romero hawk watch spot, along with chairs and liquid refreshments. We got up there about 10:30 where we were above the fog, and almost immediately began to see Lewis's Woodpeckers heading west along the ridgeline above us. Some would land and circle around for a while, appearing to be bug catching, before carrying on. At about 11:30 we saw a line of Lewis's flying below us, approximately where the fog ended. In this group, which took about a minute to pass, I counted 97 (ninety-seven!) birds. The last bird passed at about noon. The total for the morning, and I'm sure there were many more I missed, was 156 birds--phenomenal. All were heading west.
We had great looks at a light-morph juvenile Swainson's Hawk that circled right overhead. We thought we were going to get skunked on Broad-winged Hawk until two birds appeared close by at eye level, and one blasted by between us and the hillside, not 30 feet away. We saw an additional bird below us before we left.
Other raptors included 18 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 3 Cooper's Hawks, 2 Kestrels, 1 Merlin, and numerous Red-tailed Hawks that didn't seem to be on the move. All the other raptors wereheading east.
Other birds included approximately 25 White-throated Swifts, 2 Ravens, and 3 Rufous-crowned Sparrows. Yellow-rumped Warblers were an almost constant presence as they moved east. They often stopped to feed before moving on.

Mark Bright and I went up to the Bella Vista hawk watch site from 2:50 till 4:40. Things were most active during the first hour. We saw 5 Broad-winged Hawks, 18 accipiters (all that were close enough were Sharpies), what might have been a Swainson's Hawk (pending photographic review), and a Lewis's Woodpecker.

  27. Good afternoon Hawkwatch on Bella Vista Drive LINK
    DATE: Oct 4, 2022 @ 7:49pm, 2 year(s) ago
As John Callender has already reported on eBird, the two of us had a good afternoon of hawk-watching at the Bella Vista Drive location. From approx. 3:45 to 5 p.m., we had 6 Broad-winged Hawks flying by, one almost directly overhead. In addition, there was some movement of accipters, most classified as "Cooper's/Sharp-shinned," but at least one of each that could be more clearly identified. In addition, we saw several Red-tailed Hawks and Turkey Vultures, most of whom I suspect were residents, and a Northern Harrier. I think John also had a Red-shouldered Hawk just as I arrived.
We saw no movement of Lewis's Woodpeckers today, but did see a few flocks of Band-tailed Pigeons in the area.

    - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S119954399
    - Media: 11 Photos
    - Comments: "This bird was on the water with a small flock of PFSHs. We followed it multiple times over for about 40 minutes as it flushed, flew, and landed with a different group. It was slightly smaller and browner-backed than the PFSHs with a long neck and distinctive pale head (though difficult to see when turned away). The pale head was basically white across the face and becoming mottled with darker feathers distally becoming darkest on the nape. The bill was long and horn colored. Flight was snappier and lighter than PF with wings bowed down in glides (I heard comparison to Corys Shearwater, a bird with which Im not very familiar). It wasnt unlike a Bullers Shearwater when moving away, though shaped differently in profile. Many photos were taken revealing additional details that were difficult to see in the field such as underwing pattern, bold scaling on the mantle, and what looks like a lack of molt limits (indicating a hatch-year bird)."
