For the eBirds among us:
There has been a discussion this fall about the Santa Cruz Island (SCI) eBird H otspots of Scorpion Harbor , Scorpion Campground , and Scorpion Canyon . The main problem being that most eBirders start their checklist in the harbor and keep on using the same hotspot as they walk to the campgrounds. To resolve this problem the Scorpion Harbor and Scorpion Campground hotspots have been merged into one:
Santa Cruz Island--Scorpion Campgrounds to Scorpion Anchorage (no seawatch)
https://ebird.org/hotspot/L2442150 The Scorpion Canyon hotspot has been moved more to the west and is now named Santa Cruz Island--Upper Scorpion Canyon
https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1772034
To capture checklists with seabirds-only from the harbor the following new hotspot has also been created: Santa Cruz Island--Scorpion Anchorage (seawatch only)
https://ebird.org/hotspot/L21361493 I realize that not everybody is going to be happy with this merger as we now have records of seabirds that are positioned inland, but I feel that the overall quality of the new (no seawatch) hotspot is better than the quality of the old hotspots. Here are some things that people can do smoothen this change: If you have previous SCI-Scorpion harbor checklists that qualify as "seawatch only", then change the location of those checklists to the new "seawatch only" hotspot. If you have previous SCI-Scorpion Canyon checklists that were reallyon the campgrounds, then change the location of those checklists to the new "Scorpion Campgrounds to Scorpion Anchorage" hotspot.
If you don't like the name of a hotspot, change that name for your personal use. If you don't like the definition of a hotspot, new or old, use your personal locations instead. Thanks
