    - Comments: "Surprise of the visit! Here (34.0478386, -119.5614698). Heard calling initially, which I thought may be an Eastern Phoebe (like a black call, but shorter and thinner). After not seeing a phoebe I noticed the call was coming from the low vegetation nearby and realized it must be a swampy. It called for 8-10 times total, relatively close. I pished and the bird popped up: a melospiza roughly the same size (perhaps slightly smaller) than the adjacent SOSP with bright rusty toned upperparts, deep but dull chestnut cap, gray unstreaked underparts, bold eyeline. I saw it for roughly 5 seconds, well and unobscured. This bird is surely wintering as opposed to a spring migrant, I think. The SOSP soon chased it away slightly farther from the stream (and we were not allowed to pursue as it was off-trail). Description by LQK. Unfortunately, given the birds furtive nature, nobody else got a good view of it, though I think a few others heard it when it was calling initially."
