There is a growing consensus that the bird reported as a Cape May Warbler at Mile Square Park last Sunday (Oct 20) is one-in-the-same as the overly streaky Blackpoll Warbler that was present at the same location the previous Monday (Oct 14). I believe that photos of both birds can be found and compared within the Warblers folder on this Yahoo site. Issues related to wingbar-coloration and bill-shape have been foremost in the discussion. Jon Dunn is adamant in his opinion that it isn’t a Cape May, and, rather than mulling on plausible hybrid combinations to explain the confusing bird, suggests it is most likely a “slightly odd” Blackpoll. So, if you were lucky enough to see the bird, it’s a good time to review your notes, photos, and memory-bank. And if you used ink on your county checklist, or life-list, time to dig through the bottom of the junk-drawer for that crusty old bottle of White-out. Jim Pike HB |
