This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, October 25.
Nine SWAINSON’S HAWKS were in South Pasadena on October 24. These birds were in
the area around Mound and Oxley, north of Monterey between Fremont and Fair
Oaks.
A female VERMILION FLYCATCHER continued at the Earvin Magic Johnson Recreation
Area in Willowbrook through October 19. It has been on the island in the south
lake.
A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD was found at El Dorado Park in Long Beach on October 19.
It was in Area 3 on the south side of the model airplane field. It was seen
through October 23. A TROPICAL KINGBIRD and a late WESTERN KINGBIRD have also
also been in this area.
In Area 2 of El Dorado Park, a VARIED THRUSH was found on October 22. It was in
the mid-section pines along Snake Road.
At Santa Fe Dam in Iwrindale from October 19-22, two to three PALM WARBLERS, and
up to three CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS were present. The warblers were on the
grassy areas around Parking Area 3-5 and the longspurs were mostly in the large
dirt field west/southwest of the last parking areas near the southwest corner of
the lake.
A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continues at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas. It
was seen near the north shore of the reservoir in the area north of the small
green pier on October 19.
Another BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at Alondra Park northwest of the playground
near the northeast corner of the park from October 20-25. A SUMMER TANAGER was
reported there on October 25.
A VIRGINIA’S WARBLER was at the Vets Garden at the V.A. in Westwood on October
24. From the 405 Freeway, exit at Montana and go south. At the National
Cemetery, turn right instead of left and follow signs to the garden next to the
baseball stadium.
A TENNESSEE WARBLER was at Sand Dune Park in Manhattan Beach from October 19-21.
It was last reported in the upper area of the park.
A probable CANADA WARBLER was at Loyola Marymount University on October 20. It
was viewed from the fourth floor of the University Hall building (adjacent to
the hill). A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was also present.
A very drab PINE WARBLER was at La Mirada Park in La Mirada on October 24. It
was in pines around the memorial near Foster Road, behind the centerfield fence
of the westernmost softball field. A late WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen a short
distance from here.
A PAINTED REDSTART and a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER were at Ed Vincent Park in
Inglewood on October 24 (in the trees across the swale from the tennis courts),
but they could not be found again. However, a returning male YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER was present in the carob at the exit of the Warren Lane parking lot on
October 25.
First one and then two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were at Madrona Marsh in Torrance
on October 20. Also seen at the marsh were two PALM WARBLERS (in the open area
along the main path) on October 20. On October 25, three PALM WARBLERS were
feeding in the sunflower patch west of the main path inside the front gate.
Hours are 10-5 Tuesday through Sunday.
Another WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was at Evey Canyon in Claremont on October 22.
The north end of the north lake at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia
hosted a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW and a BOBOLINK
on October 21. The next day, all these birds continued with the addition of a
VESPER SPARROW. The park is on Peck Road south of Live Oak.
VENTURA COUNTY—
An EASTERN PHOEBE (between the bridge and eucalyptus grove) and a SUMMER TANAGER
(near the pistachio trees) were at Ojai Meadow Preserve in Ojai on October 23.
A late WESTERN KINGBIRD was also reported.
A YELLOW-GREEN VIREO was found at the Wolff Road tamarisks on October 24. An
AMERICAN REDSTART was there along with the vireo on October 25. The tamarisks
are on Wolff Road below 5th Street.
