  1. Salton Sea (south) - 24 March 2023 LINK
    DATE: Mar 25, 2023 @ 8:46am, 2 year(s) ago
I spent Friday 24 March 2023 (6:30 AM to 5:00 PM) looking for birds along part of the shore of the Salton Sea and at a few select locations in the Imperial Valley. I started the day at Fig Lagoon, then drove northward into Brawley, stopping to look at Sheldon Reservoir on the way. In Brawley I looked briefly at the hummingbird feeders on Willard Avenue, then spent some time in Cattle Call Park and far less time at Riverview Cemetery. I then drove northwestward to Unit 1 of the Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge. From Unit I drove northeastward to the west end of Young Road and followed the seawall northeastward to Obsidian Butte. I then dove east to the Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge HQ. At the Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge HQ I looked at the ponds adjacent to Rock Hill, the shoreline of the Salton Sea from Rock Hill and around the entry area. From the Refuge HQ I drove east on Pound Road to the southern end of International Avenue in Niland, stopping to look at Morton Bay on the way. From Niland I followed Blair Road to the Calipatria State Prison, then drove southwestward into Calipatria. I looked briefly at the areas along Eddins Road west of town, then drove southeastward to Wiest Lake and southwestward into Brawley. From Brawley I drove south to Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro and on to the southeast corner of El Centro, stopping at Fudge Reservoir and the flooded area adjacent to Neckel Road on the way. After spending time near the southeast corner of El Centro, I drove west to San Diego, stopping to look at Sunbeam Lake and Fig Lagoon on the way. Clear with wind most of the day, and with temperatures ranging from 5 to 75 degrees. Waterfowl are obviously departing northward, and other species such as the wintering Red-tailed Hawks and Says Phoebes are also leaving the Imperial Valley. Some of the early spring migrants, especially Western Kingbirds, had returned.
