Greetings,
The Wood Sandpiper was in the public access of San Jacinto Wildlife Area, this morning Apr 2. I and one other birder initially found it at about 7:30AM giving very brief views before disappearing into the reeds. It teased us with brief glimpses at several sections of the reed patches for the next 1 1/2 hours until I left at 10:00AM. When I first got there just before 7:00AM, there was dense ground fog but lifted as soon as the sun hit the ponds. This statement still applies: (The bird is in shallow water along the main road about 0.7 miles east of the headquarters, approximately here:33.876990,-117.112470).

[inlandcountybirds] Another chance to look for the
Wood Sandpiper, Sunday March 12
LINK
DATE: Mar 6, 2023 @ 3:01pm, 2 year(s) ago
FROM: Tom Benson
Hi all,
We have received permission to look for the Wood Sandpiper at the Ramona and adjacent Mystic Hunt Clubs for this Sunday March 12. We will meet at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area Headquarters parking lot at 7:30AM to discuss logistics, any hunt club concerns, etc. Please email me at aemetcalf@... if interested so I can give the hunt clubs an estimate of folks coming. Note that conditions have changed at the clubs and the SJWA due to water draw down at the end of waterfowl season combined with stormy weather, and so there is no certainty that we will refind the bird.
Sincerely,
Tony Metcalf

Wood Sandpiper - eBird stakeout hotspot
LINK
DATE: Dec 21, 2022 @ 9:42pm, 2 year(s) ago
FROM: Tom Benson
For those who are chasing the Wood Sandpiper tomorrow, please enter your observations from the private duck club ponds at the newly created stakeout hotspot "Ramona Hunt Club & Mystic Duck Club (stakeout Wood Sandpiper 2022; NO PUBLIC ACCESS)". If you do any birding before or after leaving the duck clubs, please create a separate checklist and use another appropriate hotspot for those observations.
And for those of you who saw the bird Tuesday, please consider moving your checklist location to the stakeout hotspot. Thank you.

WOOD SANDPIPER on private property
LINK
DATE: Dec 20, 2022 @ 11:37am, 2 year(s) ago
FROM: Thomas Benson
There is a Wood Sandpiper on private property near the San Jacinto Wildlife Area, today, Dec 20, found by David Rankin on the CBC. Unfortunately we have to be off the property by 12 PM, so there is little opportunity to chase this bird today. We will be trying
to arrange access on a future date, and will post information on the listserv if that opportunity arises.

PS In its current location it is not visible from the SJWA, and SJWA is closed on Wednesdays and Saturdays for hunting. |

Wood Sandpiper viewing, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, other birds today
LINK
DATE: Sep 22, 2018 @ 9:54pm, 6 year(s) ago
FROM: Rob Fowler
Hi all, Glad the Wood Sand was seen by so many today! Unfortunately somebody felt the need to walk out into the wetland leaving a bunch of deep footprints in the mud there. The wetlands are technically private property and one should only be birding them from the beach side and not walking into the wetlands themselves. I hope your pictures were worth leaving such an obvious trace!
On another note Mario Balitbit, who noted the footprints in the Wood Sandpiper area (and didn't see the Wood Sandpiper then) found a SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER at the far north end of the wetlands, in the grassy area north of the last large bit of water.
Other things today were a continuing very dull BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER at Janes Creek Meadows in Arcata (see previous post for directions). A MAGNOLIA WARBLER was found by George Ziminsky on the north side of Klopp Lake at the Arcata Marsh. A PRAIRIE WARBLER was found out at the Horse Pasture patch out on the north spit by Amaya Bechler and Alexandra Lamb and a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER continued there, too.
Happy September vagranting,

Bill Moramarco found it. We are standing on the been, looking east. Two of us had a bird that looked like a Black Rail, but we don't dare enter it into eBird. Tom Miko 909.241.3300 Humboldt (instead of being home with my wife and kids)

Hi all, WOOD SANDPIPER still present at sw corner of the Centerville Wetlands this morning. Also a continuing SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER and 4 species of falcons, with the highlight being a PRAIRIE FALCON that got every shorebird up and flying around the wetland. If you still want to chase this Wood Sand you had better do it soon!

Hi, I might leave LA tomorrow night (Friday 9/21/18) for Marin County and Humboldt, chasing the Eastern Yellow Wagtail and the Wood Sandpiper. If I am up there, I would also like to take a stab at Ruffed Grouse, which would be a life bird. I don't want to only count on the Google Maps provided by eBird for these locations. Please email me (or even hit 'reply all') for specifics of where to park, walk, then look for the 3 species mentioned, above. Thanks,
