There are a number of resources (already mentioned) about understanding molt patterns - but if you want to learn about the why's of molt in an evolutionary and ecological context, the best resourceis the recently published "The Biology of Moult in Birds" by Lukas Jenni and Raffael Winkler. It's a European perspective, but we won't hould that against them.
