It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
The specific epithet cruentatus 'bloodstained' is derived from the Latin verb cruentare 'to stain with blood'.
