[3:00 PM] November 20th, 2010 by ROBB HAMILTON: I just stopped in at the original spot in Belmont Shore and found the Black-tailed Gull sitting on a bouy just off the little beach on Bay Shore south of Second Street.
[1:50 PM] November 11th, 2010 by DICK NORTON: Janet Cupples just reported that the Black-tailed Gull has not been seen today, and that birders have been looking since sunrise.
[4:40 PM] November 10th, 2010 by TOM BENSON: Today (Nov 10) Brad Singer, Doug Karalun, and I successfully chased the Black-tailed Gull at Alamitos Bay. The bird was present at the south end beach as Karen Gilbert described earlier (see below). It was present there from before we arrived at 3:50 PM until 4:40 PM when it flew off toward the ocean, presumably to roost at sea.
[3:00 PM] November 10th, 2010 by KAREN GILBERT: At about 1:15 this afternoon (Wednesday) the Black-tailed Gull was on a buoy just off the end of the short pier behind the Gondola Ride blue building on Ocean Blvd at the far south end of the bay. After 20 minutes or so the gull flew out towards the channel, harassed a Heermann's Gull, then circled back and landed on the water just off the small beach at the south end of the bay. It then returned to its original spot at on the west side of the bay, exactly where Robb first found it, and continued there until I left at around 3:00 PM. Many birders were arriving by then so there should be more reports to follow.
[2:00 PM] November 10th, 2010 by DAVE BELL: Apparently the location is a few hundred yards south along the shore of Alamitos Bay from the original location, just east of the intersection of Ocean and Bay Shore in Long Beach.

[17:00PM] November 8th, 2010 by KIMBALL GARRETT: The winter adult Black-tailed Gull was showing very well for many birders (and photographers with big lenses) along Bay Shore Dr. in Alamitos Bay/Naples/Long Beach until I left around 12:45pm. I presume it is still there now. I'm sure links to many good photos will be posted soon.
Just to repeat the directions:
From the southbound 405 (San Diego Fwy.): Exit at Studebaker Rd. (just west of the 605 Fwy.). Go right (south) on Studebaker to Westminster Ave.
From northbound 405: Take 22 Fwy west to Studebaker Rd. or to Pacific Coast Hwy. and go south (on either of those) to Westminster Ave.
Then go right (west) on Westminster Ave., crossing over the first bridge onto Naples Island. Immediately after the second bridge (i.e., as you leave Naples Island), turn left (south) on Bay Shore Dr.
The gull flock is on the beach on the left (east) side of Bay Shore Dr., anywhere from 100m to about 300m south of 2nd Street (which is what Westminster Ave. is called at that point). There is plenty of parking (at least on weekdays) on the west side of Bay Shore.
The flock consists of the usual beach bums: Ring-billed, California, a few Western and Heermann's, and the star of the day.
